A name is the first gift you give to your pet. Or maybe a name was already chosen for your rescued pet and you decided to keep it. Regardless, a name is an important factor of your identity because everything is made of energy and so is your name. For example, when you hear a dog with the name Beast or Rebel, what kind of dog do you imagine? Probably not the most friendly, cute, small, cuddly dog. Animals can feel the negative connotation of their name and may not always be keen on it. I remember talking to a tiger named Shadow. He was a depressed tiger in captivity and expressed that he did not like the name due to its dark connotation.
As I write this, I came across a kitten on the shelter website named Slenderman. Really? We may not notice it but we are subconsciously making judgments and a name like that can deter potential adopters. When I adopted Daisy over 10 years ago, her name at the rescue was Scooter because she uses a wheelchair. While I did not have animal communication skills at that point, I knew that name was not fitting. I renamed her Daisy so that she could blossom into a beautiful flower.
When I welcome a cat into Suncatcher Sanctuary, I am very careful to choose a name using my intuition, imagination, love, and respect to ensure that the name matches the cat’s energy. Sometimes it comes to me right away during my meditation session, other times inspiration of the vibe comes through and I look up names online that are the most fitting.
What did you name your pet’s name and why? Or if a name was already chosen, why did you decide to keep it? We would love to hear as I need some name ideas for the future as I continue to rescue more cats!
